Betting in Greece as a British expat

Greece has a proper licensed market with bet365 in it, a small tax on winning bets that surprises every Brit, and, as of 2026, one of the most aggressive anti-offshore enforcement regimes in Europe.

Updated August 2026

The short version. Online sports betting is legal with Hellenic Gaming Commission licensed operators, and bet365 holds a Greek licence, so the brand follows you. William Hill, Sky Bet and Ladbrokes do not. Winning bets are taxed per slip above €100, withheld automatically. Offshore sites are blocked by the thousands, betting with them is an offence, and a 2026 law tightened everything further. Stay licensed.

What happens to your UK accounts

bet365 has held Greek licences since 2021, so like Spain and Cyprus you re-register on the Greek-regulated side rather than keeping the UK account; contact support before you move and withdraw first. William Hill lists Greece as a no-access country. Sky Bet serves only the British Isles. Ladbrokes holds no Greek licence. Those three are over once your address changes.

The licensed field

The market leader is Stoiximan, which is the Greek face of the group known abroad as Betano, and it is genuinely good: deep football coverage, fast app, sharp Premier League pricing. Alongside it: bet365, Novibet, Betsson, Interwetten, Winmasters, NetBet and OPAP’s Pame Stoixima. Around 18 licensed operators in total, all checkable on the HGC register.

The winnings tax, explained

Greece taxes the profit on each winning betting slip, withheld by the operator before payout: nothing up to €100 profit, 2.5% from €100 to €200, 5% from €200 to €500, and 7.5% above €500. A €50 win costs you nothing; a €1,000 win arrives €75 lighter. It stings, but it is automatic, final and modest at normal stakes; you file nothing. Ignore the 15% and 20% figures on older websites, those bands died years ago.

Why offshore is a genuinely bad idea here

Greece blocks over 11,000 gambling domains, bars payment providers from processing blacklisted transactions, and makes betting with an unlicensed site an offence for the player, up to three months and a €5,000 to €20,000 fine, with illegal winnings confiscable. And 2026 brought a new enforcement law aimed at everyone in the chain, from operators to the influencers promoting them. Enforcement against ordinary punters has historically been rare, but every part of the machinery got sharper this year, and with Stoiximan and bet365 legally available there is nothing offshore worth any of it.

Money matters

Licensed books run cards, instant banking and local wallets like Viva, in euros. Deposits and withdrawals are unremarkable, which is exactly what you want. The operators pay a 35% tax on their gaming revenue, which shows up as slightly fatter margins than the UK; shopping the licensed field for the best price matters.
