Responsible gambling

Betting should cost you what a hobby costs. No more.

Everything on this site assumes betting is entertainment paid for out of money you can afford to lose. This page is here for when that stops being true, for you or someone near you.

Set the guardrails before you need them

Every bookmaker we list offers these tools free. The time to switch them on is when you open the account, not after a bad month.

Deposit limits cap what you can put in per day, week or month. Decide the number away from the site, then set it. Time-outs lock your account for a short breather, from a day to several weeks. Self-exclusion closes the door properly for months or years, and the operator must not let you back early. Reality checks pop up to tell you how long you’ve been logged in.

Signs it’s stopped being fun

Chasing losses with bigger stakes. Betting money that was meant for rent, bills or the flight home. Hiding the app or the amounts from a partner. Betting to feel normal rather than for the buzz. Topping up to keep a session going after the budget is gone. One of these on a bad weekend is human; a pattern is the signal to stop and talk to someone.

Living abroad can add its own pressure: new country, fewer mates around, more time online. Be more honest with yourself about the pattern, not less.

Free, confidential help, wherever you live

Gambling Therapy offers free online support worldwide in multiple languages, including live advisers and a 24-hour app: the best first stop for expats. In the UK, GamCare runs the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, free, 24 hours. Gamblers Anonymous holds meetings in dozens of countries and online. Blocking software such as Gamban shuts gambling sites out of all your devices at once.

If gambling has you thinking about harming yourself, that is beyond what a helpline chat should carry alone: contact local emergency services or a crisis line where you live, today.

Our own rules

We write for adults who bet for fun. We don’t publish content aimed at anyone under 18, we don’t present betting as a way to make money or fix money problems, and we link help resources on every page of this site. If you ever see us break one of those rules, tell us and we’ll fix it.
